Artist Statement

      My work can be described as curious, mysterious, uncanny, bulging, cancerous, mass, abstract, gross, beautiful, bloody, dark, gothic, modern, malnourished, decaying, and human. The last four years have been focused on the exploration of materials and mediums. Medicine treats the body as matter while art treats the body as medium for meaning. Provoking curiosity about the body is my starting point in the studio and a goal of the work function for others. The outcome is uncomfortable and grotesque pieces that provoke curiosity within the artist and the viewer. I focus on discrete elements to elicit curiosity about dissonant forms, like growths and bodily mass, through sculptural abstraction. I have had people in the past look at my work and ask, “Why?”  It leads back to the word ‘curiosity’, but also the intimacy with something grotesque, mysterious, and uncanny. There is a body and mind dualism at play.
